What is Baptism?
Baptism removes our old sinful nature, instils new love, overcomes the power of evil and sin, renews us in the Spirit, makes us children of God and members of the Church — the family of God’s people. It is the first and most fundamental of all sacraments, the gateway to life in the Spirit.
Key Requirements
-
1
Attend the preparation class
Parents are required to attend at least one week before the baptism — this is mandatory, not optional.
-
2
Bring the child’s details
The child’s full name, date of birth and godparent’s name must be clearly noted and brought to the ceremony.
-
3
Godparent requirements
The godfather and godmother must be practising Catholics in good standing. They take on the responsibility of the child’s spiritual guidance.
-
4
Baptism schedule
Baptism is celebrated after the 8:30 AM Mass on the First Sunday of every month.
-
5
Receive Holy Communion together
Both parents and godparents must receive Holy Communion together before the baptism.
-
6
Married Catholic couples as godparents
Married Catholic couples are generally responsible for being godparents to the child.
-
7
Required items
A Christian name, white clothing and a candle must be brought on the day of baptism.
-
8
Coming from another parish?
A letter from your previous parish priest must be obtained before baptism here.
-
9
Emergency baptism
In an emergency, pour water over the child’s head saying “I baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.” Immediately inform the parish priest.

Mother’s health
A mother who has recently given birth should not bring a newborn to church while unwell. Wait until both mother and child are in good health.
To arrange a Baptism, contact the Parish Office and our parish priest will guide you through the preparation.
