Marriage

A covenant of love — blessed and sanctified by God

What is Marriage?

Marriage is a covenant of love and a commitment to life. The sacrament points to the love that exists between God and man, Christ and the Church — creating family bonds in the pattern of that love and sanctifying that life. It is a sacred and lifelong commitment entered into freely and with full consent.

Key Requirements

  1. 1

    Free and full consent

The bride and groom must enter marriage with complete freedom. No compulsion or conditions of any kind are acceptable.

  2. 2

    Parental blessing

Since marriage is a community sacrament, the couple must not begin life together without the approval of their parents and the blessing of their elders.

  3. 3

    Minimum age

Women must be at least 18 years old. Men must be at least 21 years old.

  4. 4

    Baptism certificate required

If baptized in another parish, bring your baptism certificate.

  5. 5

Inform the parish two months in advance

Those wishing to send a marriage letter must inform the parish priest at least two months before the wedding date.

  6. 6

    Three marriage announcements

Three announcements will be read at the church on consecutive Sundays before the wedding.

  7. 7

Decide the wedding date with the parish priest

It is best to consult the parish priest before finalizing the wedding date.

  8. 8

Settle all fees before the receipt

If fees and subscriptions have not been paid, contact the parish priest and settle the amount before receiving your receipt.

  9. 9

    Diocesan catechism certificate required

Before sending the marriage letter, both must attend the diocesan catechism class and receive a certificate. On the wedding day, obtain the authorization letter from your parish priest and give it to the priest at the wedding venue.

  10. 10

    Receive sacraments beforehand

Both the couple and their witnesses must go to Confession and receive Holy Communion before the wedding Mass.

  11. 11

    Register as a family

After marriage, register as a new family in the parish and receive your Sacred Heart Church family card.

  12. 12

Accept Jesus Christ as the head of your family

Grow in Christian faith and moral life, live according to His teachings and become His witnesses.

To arrange your Marriage at Sacred Heart Church, contact the Parish Office at least two months in advance.
